Constructional Material of Contact Lenses

Contact lens are specially designed lens which are placed at the cornea of the eye. It becomes invisible after it is inserted in the eyes. The Constructional Material of Contact Lenses at first were of glass. It was replaced as it caused irritation in eyes and it was also not recommended to wear it for a longer time. People could not wear it also for longer period.

Then, William Feinbloom came up with different Constructional Material of Contact Lenses. He started using polymethyl methacrylate or popularly known as PMMA or simply, Plexigals or Perspex. Contact lens became very convenient to use with the introduction of this material. These lenses were referred as hard lenses. Though it was convenient to previous type, it also had its own side effects. This Constructional Material of Contact Lenses, did not allow any oxygen to transmit to cornea from it, which could cause some diseases and irritations in the eyes.

During 1980s to 1990s, Constructional Material of Contact Lenses got improved even more and some materials were introduced which were oxygen permeable.

These polymers are known as rigid gas permeable or simply, GRP. They offered lot of unique properties. These lenses could replace natural shape of cornea with refracted surface, newly introduced. These provided good vision to people suffering from astigmatism or diseases leading to distortion of corneal shapes.

The recent development of Constructional Material of Contact Lenses, are the soft menses. It was first made by Otto Wichterle, who launched hydrogel lenses. Polymacon is used in these type of lenses. They are of utmost comfort and it do not give any sensation of wearing anything in eyes. The Constructional Material of Contact Lenses used in these soft lenses have even improved over a period of 25 years.

Nowadays, a small rigid lens is also placed on top of soft lens. This is done when a single lens cannot solve the clinical purpose of eye vision correction. This type can provide the exact power required with great comfort. Silicon hydrogels have also come in the market which provide very high permeability of oxygen. These are intended for overnight wear though daily wear which are not overnight wear have also been launched in the markets. The silicone in these lenses make the eyes wet providing more natural feeling and comfort. It reduces the dryness in contact lens wearing. Some of the lens even have some re wetting agents internally which are useful in making the lens hrdrophilic.

So, if you are thinking of wearing contact lens, be it for fashion purpose or clinical, visit a doctor to get the proper guidance of selecting the appropriate Constructional Material of Contact Lenses. Then, you can start looking at a new world through the contact lens eyes.
